Do You Collect Valuables? Steps for Moving Them Successfully

Admin • September 13, 2021

Moving is usually no easy feat. For collectors of valuables, the thought of moving can be especially stressful. If your valuable collection becomes damaged, the items can decrease in value. Whether you collect antique glassware, train sets, or other delicate items that can easily damage, you likely want to be sure the move is done carefully.

The following are some steps to take to ensure your collection remains safe and intact during your move.

Meet With Your Mover in Advance

Hire a moving company experienced in moving fragile and delicate items. Prior to the move, talk about your collection and its value so they are aware of the importance of these items. On moving day, set your collection aside from your other household items so the movers will know to take extra care when moving those boxes.

Insure Your Collection

If you do not have insurance on your collection, consider doing so before your move. Check with your homeowners insurance provider and ask if they offer insurance for valuable collections. If your current insurance provider does not offer a collections policy, you can purchase a standalone policy.

To get insurance, you will need both the appraisal and the detailed list of each item. As you research your insurance options, pay special attention to the terms of the policy. Make sure you purchase a policy that covers your losses in case of damage during a move.

You can also obtain a standard insurance policy from your professional moving company. Keep in mind these policies may not cover the full value of your items damaged or lost during a move.

Make a Detailed List of Items in Your Collection

In advance of your move, take the time to make an exhaustive list of every item in your collection. List each item by type, size, color, age, and other distinguishing characteristics. Also, include a photo of each item for the list.

Create a spreadsheet with columns for each item to contain pertinent information. Make several copies of your list to ensure you do not lose it. Have your list on hand during and after the move to help you stay organized.

Appraise Your Collection

If your collection is of high monetary value, consider having a professional appraise each item if you have not already done so. To get an appraisal, contact an appraiser who specializes in your specific collection of items. Your appraiser should provide a report on the value of your collection.

Keep a copy of the appraisal with your list. If anything happens to one or more of your items, you will need this information for insurance purposes.

Take Care When Packing

If you plan to pack your collection yourself, purchase any special materials you need to ensure the items in the collection do not break. The packing items will vary based on the type of collection you have.

If you have glass items in your collection, you will need a lot of foam material to wrap each item, along with bubble wrap and Styrofoam peanuts to provide enough cushion.

You may also want to purchase heavy-duty boxes and extra strong packing tape. Tape every seam of the boxes to prevent box breakage.

Once you pack the items, write down the contents on the box. Give each box a number. Write this information on your list for each corresponding item. This step helps you stay organized, and you can quickly find certain items when you need them.
