If you plan to move, you may want to consider the ways your move impacts the environment. The use of moving supplies and other tasks could create a lot of waste while you move.

Follow our tips to get some ideas for waste reduction and plan out your own environmentally-friendly move.

1. Use the Right Packing Supplies

One of the biggest sources of waste during a move is the overuse of packing supplies. Bubble wrap, foam fillers, and large air bubble packing uses a lot of plastic waste when you pack items.

Avoid the purchase of bubble wrap supplies and learn to use your own items for packing as an alternative. For example, all of the linens in your house could be used to wrap and protect different items.

Small wash clothes and hand towels could be used for glasses, mugs, and other smaller items like salt and pepper shakers. Larger towels could be used to protect electronics like Blu-Ray players, tablets, and cable boxes. Blankets may be used for larger items including jewelry boxes, gaming systems, and large collectibles you want to protect.

When you use all of the linen to pack and protect valuables, you do not need to purchase packing material just to pack those items in.

2. Recycle Moving Boxes

When you move, there is no reason to purchase brand new moving boxes when recycled moving boxes offer the same support without the need to waste new resources.

There are many locations which offer box donations from others who have already moved. Larger box stores and bulk purchase stores may often have areas with free boxes available for customers.

Some storage unit locations may even have "Take A Box, Leave a Box" bins where you could find boxes and return your own boxes once your move is completed.

You might also check out a variety of neighborhood apps to see which of your neighbors may offer moving boxes after a recent move.

3. Organize Disposal Boxes

As you plan a move, there will be numerous items in your home that you throw away or simply no longer need. As an alternative to just tossing the items in a landfill, take a little extra effort to plan out various ways to donate and recycle them.

Set up bags or bins to help separate items so extra waste is not created . For example, you may have a bag for old clothes you no longer want or need. The clothes may be donated to various organizations who give them away, upcycle them, or find other ways to recycle them.

Extra bags and boxes may be used for recycling items as opposed to just a large garbage bag. Once filled, find out the best ways to recycle in your local community to ensure all of the items go to the right place.

4. Move During Daytime Hours

As you move from home to home, you may double the amount of light energy used in the homes. While you pack and unpack, try to plan to do as much as you can during the daylight hours. With natural light, you will not need to waste energy on lighting all of the rooms as you pack up boxes and carry them around.

With daytime hours, you will also not need to rely on flood lights or any other exterior light.

Many moving companies will work mostly during the daytime hours anyway, so you will have the ability to reduce energy waste pretty easily. Small steps like reducing the amount of light use can help make a big difference overall and will help encourage other ways to reduce energy consumption in your home.
